Project Name:
KanPak
Location:
Arkansas City, KS, USA
Type of Plant:
Industrial
Technology Used:
Biowater CMFF® Process
Biomedia Used:
Biowater BWT-X®
Operational Since:
2011
The Challenge
KanPak’s existing wastewater treatment plant had unique challenges associated with fluctuating temperatures, flow and pollutant load. The biofilm followed by activated sludge system was loaded beyond its capacity, and operators were challenged to balance solids. Design criteria for average and peak conditions are exceeded due to production volume increase.
The Design
KanPak selected Biowater’s CMFF® biofilm process to retrofit the second-stage activated sludge reactor to remove organics prior to sewer discharge. The overall process is a two-stage aerobic biofilm system followed by dissolved air flotation (DAF) as shown.
Parameter | Influent Criteria | Effluent Criteria |
Design Flow, gpd | 259,200 | n/a |
COD, mg/L (kg/day) | 6,975 (6,848) | n/a |
BOD5, mg/L (kg/day) | 5,580 (5,479) | 300 |
TSS, mg/L (kg/day) | 350 (344) | 350 |
Achievements
The pretreatment system was started up in 2009 with Biowater’s CMFF® retrofit operating in 2011. The system meets the effluent design criteria:
